چکیده

This paper introduces a shift rostering problem that surprisingly has not been studied in literature: the weekend shift rostering problem. It is motivated by our experience that employees’ shift preferences predominantly focus on the weekends, since many social activities happen during weekends. The Weekend Rostering Problem (WRP) addresses the rostering of weekend shifts, for which we design a problem specific heuristic. We consider the WRP as the first phase of the shift rostering problem. To complete the shift roster, the second phase assigns the weekday shifts using an existing algorithm. We discuss effects of this two-phase approach both on the weekend shift roster and on the roster as a whole. We demonstrate that our first-phase heuristic is effective both on generated instances and real-life instances. For situations where the weekend shift roster is one of the key determinants of the quality of the complete roster, our twophase approach shows to be effective when incorporated in a commercially implemented algorithm.

A Decomposition, Construction and Post- Processing Approach for Nurse Rostering

This paper presents our work on decomposing a specific nurse rostering problem by cyclically assigning blocks of shifts, which are designed considering both hard and soft constraints, to groups of nurses. The rest of the shifts are then assigned to the nurses to construct a schedule based on the one cyclically generated by blocks. The schedules obtained by decomposition and construction can be ...

An Integer Programming-Based Nurse Rostering System

This paper considers a real-world rostering problem at the Gold Coast Hospital, Queensland. Nurse rostering is a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) [3]. The task is to find a consistent allocation of shift values, for a group of nurses, over a fixed period of time, that satisfy a set of rostering constraints. These constraints include i) acceptable shift combinations (or schedules) for indiv...

Staff rostering for the station personnel of a railway company

This paper presents a case study commissioned by the Spanish railway carrier Ferrocariles Españoles de Vı́a Estrecha for the annual rostering of work schedules for station personnel. A mixed rostering process is used. The first part of the process is carried out manually with the aid of a spreadsheet and Visual Basic, and consists of designing an initial graphic with 4-week patterns for each sta...

A Constraint-based Nurse Rostering System Using a Redundant Modeling Approach

This paper describes the design and implementation of a nurse rostering system using a redundant modeling approach. Nurse rostering is defined as a process of generating timetables for specifying the work shifts of nurses over a given period of time. This process is difficult because the human roster planner has to ensure that every rostering decision made complies with a mixture of hard hospit...

Nurse rescheduling with shift preferences and minimal disruption

Hospital wards must be staffed 24 hours a day by a limited number of nurses. With a well documented shortage of nurses in many countries, effective rostering of nurse shifts is crucial. Recent research on nurse rostering has focused on creating flexible rosters that are attractive to nurses, with the joint aims of improving the quality of care and increasing staff retention. To achieve this, so...
